Three years ago, with a rise in hate crimes and acts of violence fueled by Islamophobia, members of the Tampa Bay community felt it was important to show support for our Muslm brothers and sisters. And so the first community potluck event at Lettuce Lake Park took place to show solidarity with the Muslim Community. The response was tremendous. According to a park ranger, over 400 cars entered the park for the event, and he estimated that total attendance was over 2000 people. Since that amazing News Years Day, this has become an annual event.
As we come into a New Year – with a lot of unknowns facing us – it is more important than ever to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity with ALL of our neighbors. On January 1, 2019 Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists and everyone else are invited to come together for the Fourth Annual CommUNITY Potluck in the Park. The event will be held at Lettuce Lake Park, 6920 E. Fletcher Ave., Tampa in shelter #10 from noon until 4:00 pm. There will be food, music, games and prizes. People are invited to bring their favorite dish to share. The event is being sponsored by the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms, Friends of Human Rights, Islamic Community of Tampa, the First United Church of Tampa, St. Pete for Peace, The Bridge, United Voices, and Tampa Friends Meeting (Quakers). We hope to see everyone there.
